Greetings!
if you don’t want to get this newsletter, just let me know [sniff]
Dear friends: Those of you who pay attention to these sorts of things are noticing that volume 10 only had one issue. that’s right. I’d like to say that I’m nifty and eccentric but sad truth is thati’m chaotic and undisciplined. . I’m back on track with normal numbering again that will hopefully last the whole year :-) Right now, I’m sitting in a Starbucks on the corner of 39th st and 8th Ave in the heart of the Big Apple. It’s been awhile since i was last here. In fact, my last trip has been chronicled in a on my upcoming album. The CD is called “Home by Another Way and it’s done, it’s infinal post-production now. . - you can check out the cover on my website. the song is called “Miracle in Manhatten 10-11-01″ Like the perfect anagramic symmatry of the numbers, the song logs a journey through the city to visit ground zero with an astounding surprising discovery on the way back. If you liked the track “Natasha’ on the Bitterwsweet disc,m you’ll love this one. This trip is mildly less dramatic but real and important. Anyway, I”m here to take part in a video shoot for a foundation alled “Voices Against Brain Cancer - kinda like a We are the World thing for brain tumors only without a song. :-) it’s an an awesome group I met last year and am delighted to be a part of. I’ll be doing a concert for them this June in the famous Hammerstein ballroom in New York City I grew up in a big city, so the energy is all quite familiar, though my wife pointed out that I’m a country boy now which may eplain why I didn’t exactly sleep like a baby last night. the 430 am garbage truck had alot to do with it. That and the 3am drunk guy. Oh, and the coffee. Well, and C-span. yes, I’m a newsjunky. OK, 2 days later, i’m back home and totally planning on getting this sent today! unless I don’t. video interview went great and I saw jesse Jackson at the airport. He actualy walked about 3 feet infront of me and was gone before I realized who it was which is fine otherwise I might have said something supid like I did when Mohammed Ali passed me at a chicago airport. “Rock n Roll!”) OK… umm.. next day. yup, didn’t get it finished last night. So now I’m on a train headed up to my pre-hippiefolksinger stomping grounds in Alexandria VA for a classic bailey church gig weekend. Every time I’m on a train, I swear I’m gonna travel more this way. It’s less efficient but infinitely more civilized. So i’ll put alittle more time into this and see if I can wrap it up…. hours later… i made it.
News and Muse
1The big news is the completion of the new cd but i’ll get more into that when it’s actually on the way. Don Henley of Eagles fame once said the best time to start a new project is the moment you end one — and… I will be returning to the studio next week to begin work on an instrumental album.
2 Last October while touring inEngland, I did an interview with Premier Christian Radio. It is now posted on the IBTA’s place on You Tube. You can access it via this link on their website in the Media section: http://www.theibta.org/index.php?page=media The interview is in three parts. While on the site, don’t miss out on all the fabulous things they are doing!
3 A friend discovered I had a page on wikipedia, which I knew about, but also that I was mentioned elsewhere as follows: “The Contemporary Christian Music scene has also been emerging with its own form of folk singers, including David M. Bailey, the Smalltown Poets and others.” This cracks me up. I had no idea I was part of a ’scene.’ :-) perhaps someday I’ll cross paths with the latter-mentioned band whom I’ve not heard of. I’m guessing yes Just cuz life works that way and the world is way smaller than we think it is.
4 The official website is getting a facelift by my whizofa webmaster who has bravely opted to tackle this depite being a new dad twice over Go Twig!
5 My Dad finished a new book that is amazing: It’s called “Jesus through Middle Eastern Eyes.” It’s his biggest and most readable book ever. I’m a wee bit biased since he blew me away by dedicating it to me with some beautiful words. It’s available in a zillion online booksites.
Staff Update!
Time to announce some changes in the bailey virtual home-office. It takes a whole team of folks to put me on stage 100 times a year with 16 Cd’s all over the planet., First, of course, my family is my inspiration and gets me to the airport each week with so much support. producers Donny and Scott in the studio, Amy behind the camera lens, David behind the website database, And tour managers Laura and Susan have been involved in the day-today grind of making sure I get to where I’m supposed to be - Laura has been and continues to manage all my church-related gigs and susan has been running the cancer/corporate tours. Awhile ago, Susan went back to school to pursue an advanced nursing degree - which she has completed and she is now working as a full time nurse — and I’m thrilled for her! But it’s tricky to be a nurse on the midnight shift and coordinate the dozens of david-details with folks all over the country so she has semi-retired from her position — i say semi- because thankfully, she as been willing to still help with my local/regional Virginia gigs so we will stay in touch and I know you join me in wishing her much success. She also worked long enough for me to find a worthy replacement - which was not easy to do - but, I did and am pleased to announce that my new cancer-related tour manager is a woman by the name of Lanette McLamb-Veres. lanette lives in Phoenix, AZ, is also a brain tumor survivor and we met several years ago at a conference in Florida. In addition to being an extraordinarily efficient and organized business person, she also has a huge heart and runs her own foundation called grey matters (http://www.graymatters.info/) part of its mission statement says ”Gray Matters is a foundation created to support and empower people impacted by brain tumors through outreach, awareness and assistance. .” This dovetails really nicely with what i do in that I get cancer email almost everyday from folks around the world who are looking for more support than I feel I am able to offer so in addition to being able to help me and my hosts put together great concerts, Lanette will be helping me help those who are hurting or overwhelmed and need the pecial kind of support she offers. Welcome Lanette! Finally, there is one more addition I’d like to mention: My website, davidmbailey.com has been a wonderful work in-progress for ten years designed and delivered by a one dedicated David Carryer. It has been my lifeline and he has been a saint with regular artful updates. last year I opted to post a presence on myspace, not realizing that to do it well required way more timeand expertise than I have. To the rescue came my fan and new friend tim Kuykendall who has graciously turned the page from an ugly thing to a wok of art. I still don’t understand it all and spend no time on it at all, but he has managed it well and keeps it alive as another stake in the cyberspace world. Thank you Tim!
Road Report
Latest round of touring began in January in Buford GA where I did a benefit gig for the braintumor center at Duke. The gig was hosted by the Brown family whose son is successfully battling a braintumor under Duke’s care. Tt was an awesome night with a highly enthusiastic and supportive crowd with a lot of energy. It made for a most excellent concert and luckily, I was in good form that night; the show was recorded by a 6-camera video team and when edited, should make for a really sweet concert DVD! Next stop was Tampa, FL where I played for the Florida Brain Tumor Association conference. It was a classic reunion of the survivor community and a joy to be with them. The weather wasn’t too shabby either
A couple nights later found me in Gainesville FL to do a tribute show for a wonderful woman who was battling a very nasty brain tumor. I was priveleged to have the chance to stop by the house and meet her before the show and was quite sobered to re-discover up close and personal how devastating this disease can be. that experience impacted the performance, which was memorable and remarkable. The entire community came out to support the family and celebrate beth’s life, whose personal motto of paying it forward created a palpable spirit of togetherness in the room. her husband Dan gave a powerful welcome and made us all feel at home. It was a beautiful and bittersweet night. Sadly, Beth passed away not long afterwards. It is encounters such as these that tend to be very difficult but where I feel particularly honored and humbled to be invited into people’s lives in the midst of some of their darkest hours. I will never forget it. There was also an amazing 6-voice accapella group that performed before I did. Amazing, as in manhatten Transfer amazing. a few weeks later I got an email from one of those singers asking permission to arrange one of my songs to add to their repetoire. how cool is that??!! (very!) Next stop was another very special and unique gig in Allentown PA. A friend & fan there was turning 60 and his wife invited me to go and do a surprise concert as her birthday gift to him. Dick showed up thinking he was attending a fundraiser and was surprised by friends and family. then a gifted local gentleman was welcomed to the stage to do a concert. After one song, he excused himself to go grab some coffee, ducked backstage then I walked out on stage instead. The surprise was total and huge fun. I had a blast trying to integrate a long list of requested favorite songs of mine into my own setlist. It was cool to think in the middle of a tune ‘hey, why don’t i do this one more often? this is a great song! :-) The next morning I shared the sermon with my friend Sue at the Barn church and that night did a sweet house concert for supporters of the same. The more of those I do the more I like them. :-) The final gig .on this run was a return to Aiken, SC. My last trip there was 6 years ago. Many hosts often have me back 1-3 years after their first gig. This 6 year span was wild in that the kids in the audience last time were now in high school and college making me feel ever so slightly old.
They did an awesome ob promoting the show and I had a really great weekend. Well, the year is off to a great start and as you will see below, there are a lot of miles ahead waiting. Most people are pretty surprised when they learn that the vast majority of my gigs for the last decade have come from invitations - but none more surprised than I. Surprised and so grateful. Hope to see you out there!Gig-Pics

Listening Trivia
From time to time i am asked what kind of music I listen to. I sheepishly confess to owning two ipods. the small one is updated daily with [yawn] current newed podcasts. The big one has ridiculously large nunmber of songs. when I’m in a zone-out mode I lean on jazz trio ensembles. Most recently I’ve been playing the grammy-winning album by Herour apartmentbie Hancock, “River” which I was delighted to discover paid tribute to one of my all time favorite albums, “Blue” by Joni Mitchell - wwhich is almost cliche to admit since a vast majority of folksingers hail it as influential - but I then listened to it on LP sitting on the floor of our 3rd floor apartment in Beirut. i didn’t know then that her alternatetunings would subliminally influence me and show up 25 years later. The other influence was sPeter Paul and mary who taught me to hamonize. I’ve since met the three of them but have not yet met Joni. Yet.
But I digress. when I’m in focused listening mode, alot of my listening cycles are consumed by reviewing a recording project in work. But, most recently, I’ve been enjoying the new cd from Babyface called ‘playlist’ His prduction is masterful; and a brilliant songwriter named Sara Groves who just slays me. But from time to time I still need a good dose of Dylan, wilcox, and jackson Browne :-).
