Response to YouTube responses

April 20th, 2008

Ok, well, I posted a few things on youtube.  My first attampt.  I knew it wasn’t great but I figured I’d just get it out there and see if people found it interesting.  They did. like, a lot.  Not being a you-tuber at all I guess I was  surprised by the response. I’ll give it another stab and try to do a little better. Gotta start somewhere.  :-)

CD Release Concert, Stafford, VA 3-29-08

March 30th, 2008

was great. goofy, but great.  It’s always a bit tricky to figure out  how to incorporate a new colection of songs into a set list that feels complete.  It’s a never ending work inprogress.  I mean, I never do exactly the same set twice, but over the course of a year, a core set tends  to make its way to the top  as I discover what tunes work well on stage, what tunes really speak to folks where  they are, adn what tunes are best left to the disc.  Some are obvious and work well both on disc and from the stage, but more often than not I’m surprised at the power of a particular song  and there is only one way to discover that — just get out there and play it and wait to see how it feels and what folks have to say afterwards.   Last night, I ended up deciding to mostly just play everything off the new cd, even those I”d never played since the day they were recorded.  You have to kind of not take yourself too seriously when you realize before you even start that ytoua re likely to make a trillion mistakes - but the bigger question is not actually executing the song - that always comes with practice.  The bigger question I always ask is why does it matter?  Like, who really cares to hear this?  Will it move anyone?  Will it cause anyone to think differently, or to think at all?  Is it just entertaining, or does it have a place for these people on this night?  How does it contribute to the overall message?  What place does it have in  he overall story I am trying to bring to the stage?  Sometimes, the answer is none.  I think I stumbled on a few of those last night, but it’s too early to tell.   On the other hand, I was excited to discover that there were a few that I thought were really cool on the album due to sweet production by Scott and Donny, but I really wasn’t sure they would carry - and they did.  So, as the year goes by, if you stop by at one of my gigs, you are likely to hear the great experiment continue and th ones that work will get played more and the ones that don’t will go to hippifolksinger heaven.   Thanks for putting up with it all. :-)

Newsletter Volume 11 #1 Feb 2008

March 29th, 2008

Greetings!

if you don’t want to get this newsletter, just let me know [sniff]

Dear friends: Those of you who pay attention to these sorts of things are noticing that volume 10 only had one issue.  that’s right. I’d like to say that I’m nifty and eccentric but sad truth is thati’m chaotic and undisciplined. . I’m back on track with normal numbering again that will hopefully last the whole year :-)  Right now, I’m sitting in a Starbucks on the corner of 39th st and 8th Ave in the heart of the Big Apple.  It’s been awhile since i was last here.  In fact, my last trip has been chronicled in a on my upcoming album.  The CD is called “Home by Another Way and it’s done, it’s infinal post-production now. .   - you can check out the cover on my website.  the song is called “Miracle in Manhatten 10-11-01″  Like the perfect anagramic symmatry of the numbers, the song logs a journey through the city to visit ground zero  with an astounding surprising discovery on the way back. If you liked the track “Natasha’ on the Bitterwsweet disc,m you’ll love this one. This trip is mildly less dramatic but real and important.  Anyway, I”m here to take part in a video shoot for a foundation alled “Voices Against Brain Cancer - kinda like a We are the World thing for brain tumors only without a song. :-)  it’s an an awesome group I met last year and am delighted to be a part of. I’ll be doing a concert for them this June in the famous Hammerstein ballroom in New York City   I grew up in a big city, so the energy is all quite familiar, though my wife pointed out that I’m a country boy now which may eplain why I didn’t exactly sleep like a baby last night.  the 430 am garbage truck had alot to do with it.  That and the 3am drunk guy. Oh, and the coffee. Well, and C-span.  yes, I’m a newsjunky. OK, 2 days later, i’m back home and totally planning on getting this sent today! unless I don’t.  video interview went great and I saw jesse Jackson at the airport. He actualy walked about 3 feet infront of me and was gone before I realized who it was which is fine otherwise I might have said something supid like I did when Mohammed Ali passed me at a chicago airport.  “Rock n Roll!”)  OK… umm.. next day.  yup, didn’t get it finished last night. So now I’m on a train headed up to my pre-hippiefolksinger stomping grounds in Alexandria VA for a classic bailey church gig weekend. Every time I’m on a train, I swear I’m gonna travel more this way.  It’s less efficient but infinitely more civilized. So i’ll put alittle more time into this and see if I can wrap it up….  hours later…  i made it.  :-)

News and Muse

1The big news is the completion of the new cd but i’ll get more into that when it’s actually on the way.   Don Henley of Eagles fame once said the best time to start a new project is the moment you end one  — and… I will be returning to the studio next week to begin work on an instrumental album.

2 Last October while touring inEngland, I did an interview with Premier Christian Radio.  It is now posted on the IBTA’s place on You Tube.  You can access it via this link on their website in the Media section: http://www.theibta.org/index.php?page=media  The interview is in three parts.  While on the site, don’t miss out on all the fabulous things they are doing!

A friend discovered I had a page on wikipedia, which I knew about, but also that I was mentioned  elsewhere as follows: The Contemporary Christian Music scene has also been emerging with its own form of folk singers, including David M. Bailey, the Smalltown Poets and others.”  This cracks me up.  I had no idea I was part of a ’scene.’  :-) perhaps someday I’ll cross paths with the latter-mentioned  band whom I’ve not heard of.  I’m guessing yes Just cuz life works that way and the world is way smaller than we think it is.

The official website is getting a facelift by my whizofa webmaster who has bravely opted to tackle this depite being a new dad twice over  Go Twig!

5 My Dad finished a new book that is amazing:  It’s called “Jesus through Middle Eastern Eyes.”  It’s his biggest and most readable book ever.  I’m a wee bit biased since he blew me away by dedicating it to me with some beautiful words.   It’s available in a zillion online booksites.

Staff Update!

Time to announce some changes in the bailey virtual home-office. It takes a whole team of folks to put me on stage 100 times a year with 16 Cd’s all over the planet., First, of course, my family is my inspiration and gets me to the airport each week with so much support.   producers Donny and Scott in the studio, Amy behind the camera lens, David behind the website database,  And tour managers Laura and Susan have been involved in the day-today grind of making sure I get to where I’m supposed to be - Laura has been and continues to manage all my church-related gigs and susan has been running the cancer/corporate tours.  Awhile ago, Susan went back to school to pursue an advanced nursing degree - which she has completed and she is now working as a full time nurse — and I’m thrilled for her!  But it’s tricky to be a nurse on the midnight shift and coordinate the dozens of david-details with folks all over the country so she has semi-retired from her position — i say semi- because thankfully, she as been willing to still help with my local/regional Virginia gigs so we will stay in touch and I know you join me in wishing her much success.  She also worked long enough for me to find a worthy replacement - which was not easy to do - but, I did and am pleased to announce that my new cancer-related tour manager is a woman by the name of Lanette McLamb-Veres. lanette lives in Phoenix, AZ, is also a brain tumor survivor and we met several years ago at a conference in Florida.  In addition to being an extraordinarily efficient and organized business person, she also has a huge heart and runs her own foundation called grey matters (http://www.graymatters.info/) part of its mission statement says  ”Gray Matters is a foundation created to support and empower people impacted by brain tumors through outreach, awareness and assistance. .” This dovetails really nicely with what i do in that I get cancer email almost everyday from folks around the world who are looking for more support than I feel I am able to offer so in addition to  being able to help me and my hosts put together great concerts, Lanette will be helping me help those who are hurting or overwhelmed and need the pecial kind of support she offers.  Welcome Lanette! Finally, there is one more addition I’d  like to mention:  My website, davidmbailey.com has been a wonderful work in-progress for ten years designed and delivered by a one dedicated David Carryer.  It has been my lifeline and he has been a saint with regular artful updates. last year I opted to post a presence on myspace, not realizing that to do it well required way more timeand expertise than I have. To the rescue came my fan and new friend tim Kuykendall who has graciously turned the page from an ugly thing to a wok of art.  I still don’t  understand it all and spend no time on it at all, but he has managed it well and keeps it alive as another stake in the cyberspace world. Thank you Tim!

Road Report

Latest round of touring began in January in  Buford GA where I did a benefit gig for the braintumor center at Duke.  The gig was  hosted by the Brown family whose son is successfully battling a braintumor under Duke’s care.  Tt was an awesome night with a highly enthusiastic and supportive crowd  with a lot of energy. It made for a most excellent concert and luckily, I was in good form that night; the show was recorded by a 6-camera video team and when edited, should make for a really sweet concert DVD!  Next stop was Tampa, FL where I played for the Florida Brain Tumor Association conference.  It was a classic reunion of the survivor community and a joy to be with them.  The weather wasn’t too shabby either :-) A couple nights later found me in Gainesville FL to do a tribute show for a wonderful woman who was battling a very nasty brain tumor. I was priveleged to have the chance to stop by the house and meet her before the show and was quite sobered to re-discover up close and personal how devastating this disease can be. that experience impacted the performance, which was memorable and remarkable.  The entire community came out to support the family and celebrate beth’s life, whose personal motto of paying it forward created a palpable spirit of togetherness in the room. her husband Dan gave a powerful welcome and made us all feel at home. It was a beautiful and bittersweet night.  Sadly, Beth passed away not long afterwards.  It is encounters such as these that tend to be very difficult but where I feel particularly honored and humbled to be invited into people’s lives in the midst of some of their darkest hours.  I will never forget it.  There was also an amazing 6-voice accapella group that performed before I did.  Amazing, as in manhatten Transfer amazing. a few weeks later I got an email from one of those singers asking permission to arrange one of my songs to add to their repetoire.  how cool is that??!!  (very!)  Next stop was another very special and unique gig in Allentown PA. A friend & fan there was turning 60 and his wife invited me to go and do a surprise concert as her birthday gift to him. Dick showed up thinking he was attending a fundraiser and was surprised by friends and family.  then a gifted local gentleman was welcomed to the stage to do a concert.  After one song, he excused himself to go grab some coffee, ducked backstage then I walked out on stage instead.  The surprise was total and huge fun. I had a blast trying to integrate a long list of requested favorite songs of mine into my own setlist.  It was cool to think in the middle of a tune ‘hey, why don’t i do this one more often?  this is a great song! :-)  The next morning I shared the sermon with my friend Sue at the Barn church and that night did a sweet house concert for supporters of the same. The more of those I do the more I like them.  :-)  The final gig .on this run was a return to Aiken, SC. My last trip there was 6 years ago. Many hosts often have me back 1-3 years after their first gig.  This 6 year span was wild in that the kids in the audience last time were now in high school and college making me feel ever so slightly old. :-) They did an awesome ob promoting the show and I had a really great weekend.  Well, the year is off to a great start and as you will see below, there are a lot of miles  ahead waiting.  Most people are pretty surprised when they learn that the vast majority of my gigs for the last decade have come from  invitations - but none more surprised than I.  Surprised and so grateful. Hope to see you out there!Gig-Pics

Listening Trivia

From time to time i am asked what kind of music I listen to.  I sheepishly confess to owning two ipods. the small one is updated daily with [yawn] current newed podcasts.  The big one has  ridiculously large nunmber  of songs.  when I’m in a zone-out mode I lean on jazz trio ensembles.  Most recently I’ve been playing the grammy-winning album by Herour apartmentbie Hancock, “River” which I was delighted to discover paid tribute to one of my all time favorite albums, “Blue” by Joni Mitchell - wwhich is almost cliche to admit since a vast majority of folksingers hail it as influential - but I then listened to it on LP sitting on the floor of our 3rd floor apartment in Beirut.  i didn’t know then that her alternatetunings would subliminally influence me and show up 25 years later. The other influence was sPeter Paul and mary who taught me to hamonize. I’ve since met the three of them but have not yet met Joni. Yet. :-) But I digress.  when I’m in focused listening mode, alot of my listening cycles are consumed by reviewing a recording project in work.  But, most recently, I’ve been enjoying the new cd from Babyface called ‘playlist’ His prduction is masterful; and a brilliant songwriter named Sara Groves who just slays me. But from time to time I still need a good dose of Dylan, wilcox, and jackson Browne :-).

Last newsletter of 2007 - Volume 10 #2

March 29th, 2008

News & Viewshello friends.  First, some numbers:  I read recently that men speak an average of 2000 words a day while women speak an average of 7000 words a day.  Some of you are thinking ‘if that is rue it explains a lot.’  In an unexpectedly related item in the news recently, women wait an average of 20 seconds more in line at the coffee shop.  My guess it takes about 20 seconds longer to say  i’d like a grande double skim extra whip skinny caramel no ice white chocolate mocha frappacino  than it does to say “large. black. ” My apologies to all you lovely ladies who drink real coffee. :-)   Actually, I learned a new term this week:  now, I’ve known for some time that coffee with an extra shot is called a red eye and coffee with 2shots is called a black eye.  But, apparantly the latter is also known as a ‘hammerhead’  I recently overheard a gentleman order a “quad Americano - just think how much more interesting it tould be to order a ‘double hammerhead”  Try that one out on your local barista.  This moring I realized that i am tired. Not the wish-I-could-sleep in tired - rather the happy wearniess of looking back on an incredible year and adding it up:  about 90gigs in 22 states and 3 countries. it was a pretty full year. - and ended really well…

Road Report

Since I last wrote I played a brain tumor conference for the good folks at the Hartford Hospital in Hartford CT- for the docs in the morning and for the patients and families inthe afternoon. In attendance was a rep from a great foundation called Voices Against Brain Cancer - they’ve sinced asked me to join them and I agreed to do so and will be performing an event for them next summer in New York City — my first appeareance inthe big Apple.  :-)  Next top was off to Dallas TX to play for that crazy rowdy group we all know and love called the Society of Neuro Oncologists.  I kid, of ourse but the truth is it was a wonderful and humbling experience to play for such a large audience of people who have helped keep me alive.  The event was held at th Gaylord Opryland Texan which is just a slightly smaller verison of the one in Nashville. it was lit up with Christmas lightsthat allegedly run the establishment an extra $900,000 a month in electricity.  I’m not kidding.  Texas…  The next night it was off to a churcch in McKinney TX, the fastest growing community in America. I’d played there several years ago and it was a delight to reconnect with that excellent community.   trivia note:  it was a couple hours outside McKinney where we shot the Tucson music video featured on my DVD.).   Thelast formal stop of the year was in Solon OH, the #1 suburb of Cleveland home of Stouffers frozen dinners  I did a beautifuly warm house concert on Saturday then worship and a concert the next day at the church.  It was really sweet to reconnect with my dear friends co-pastors  Jeff and Kerri Peterson-Davis and to see the amazing things they have done with the church. jeff and I stopped in at the Caribou drive through on our way back from the airport and since they were out of dark roast I asked for a couple extra shots in our drinks.  When I learned that we were getting charged for the shots I was about the hassle the guy in the window; just as I leaned forward to let loose he kinda stared at me and said “hey… are you david bailey?  Well that kinda took the wind out of my lecture. I mean this happens to me at airports fairly regularly but not in coffee shops of towns where I’ve never been before. then he stared at Jeff and said ‘hey, aren’t you that pastor dude?  Long story short, after exchanging some kindwords I ended up hassling him anyway about the shots.  He showed up at the concert with a bag of dark roast beans for me  which left me feeling a wee bit sheepish and a wee bit smug.  an odd combination. Anyway it was one of the if not the best show of the year and I played about 2 hours straight to a packed room with a great vibe.  Nice way to end the year.

Closing Thoughts

December is my [mostly] stay home month and I’m just starting to kinda catch up mentally.   I was gonna do my annual crazy Christmas clearence sale but just didn’t get to it.  i was gonna orchestrate a big website update but,  well… just didn’t get to it.   i have been  putting the final touches on next CD which is almost done.  I threw out all the other name options and it’s going to be called “Home By Another Way.”    Sometimes Art really does imitate life.  More often than not, actually. So I’ll spend the next couple weeks on that and before you know it it will be time to get the suitcase out again.  On that note, booking me in ‘08…. WHAT?!?  2 Days before Christmas and I mention booking?!?  Well, yes because tired or not, busy or not life goes on and before I know it the schedule will be slammed again and I’ll start saying ‘maybe next year’  to the many very kind invitations I get.   So for all those interested in doing something in ‘08 now is the time to speak up and I’ll do my very best to make it happen.  Plus this coming year I think I want to do a few more house concerts so if you are interested in that and live near where I’m already going it could be a very sweet match.    in closing, thank you all so very very very much for your  continued tireless support and encouragement.  Ihope the Christmas season brings with it peace beyond understanding.  It’s still the only thing I want.

Summer Lullaby

March 28th, 2008

Summer rain was falling on the field of winter rye
Spent my afternoon watching every hour go by
Before I really knew it, the sun began to set
Then came a sacred moment I never will forget
The breeze began to blow and the trees began to sing
The rye began to whisper as the birds all took to wing
A symphony of silence, a peaceful lullaby
A voice of many colors and I looked up to the sky
Clouds looked like a train on its way to who knows where
I smiled as I wondered if I ever would go there
I looked over my shoulder at the road theat lead to town
I knew that it was not the one the clouds were going down
But the absence of choices can make the path quite clear
The rye whispered again:  ‘you belong right here.’

And here you are

You Come Home

March 28th, 2008

When you been a long time running and there is no place to goWhen you can’t see your horizons and you just don’t seem to knowThe answers to the questions encompassing your mindThat sense of peace and quiet rest you just can’t seem to find Well you come home to me my friend, you come home to meYou come home to me my friend, you come home, to me When you’re riding the wings of tomorrow and forgetting all about todayWhen you’re chasing the dreams of the sunrise and you’re searching for a better wayWhen you’re hoping to find a new road and you’re thinking bout the things to beBut your dark past catches up to you and you’re lost in eternity Well you come home…. I will offer you a havenI will offer you a place to lay your headI will listen to your troublesI will bind the wounds where you have bled. Oh yeah… When the lover you have known so long just walks right out the doorAnd the people you depended on don’t come round anymoreAnd you think you want a change but you don’t know where to startShould you listen to your mind or should you listen to your heart Well you come home….
